Question!

Okay, as per my political science reading, I need everyone who actually reads my blog to answer me this:

1) Why do you, or don't you, vote?

2) What do you think are some of the reasons for low voter turn-out?

Thanks everyone!

1. I vote so I can complain. It's hypocritical to express an objection to a political system you are not a part of. I also vote to try and conteract the voting of people who are complete idiots. I vote because I'm scared of what will happen if voter numbers get any lower. I vote because it'an imperfect foundation to a flawed political system, but it's what we've got and we have to use it to change it. I vote because it is my responsibility, my duty even, to do so.

2. Voter turnout is low because we don't have any principles any more. When I talk to students and friends about voting and express those opinions I expressed above they look at me like I'm on crack. We have no principles or sense of duty these days. Turnout is low because people are lazy. Turnout is low because people are uninformed and have enough sense to know they should be informed to vote, but not enough sense to go and get informed. Turnout is low not because politicians are corrupt, but because some people don't believe in leaders any more and resent the whole idea of electing someone to have power over them. Turnout is low because people don't see the connection between what they vote for and what happens. We live in a world of instant gratification and when you vote you never get what you pay for and there are no refunds being offered so go shopping instead.
